Cool-tiques and the Joy of the Unexpected

Don’t you just love it when you stumble upon an unexpected treasure?

On a visit to my kids and grandkids last weekend, we decided to check out a new antique store my son had spotted while driving home from work on Friday. The store is located just a hop and skip down the road in Slocomb, AL.

Cool-tiques proves the old adage, the best things in life come in small packages. It is a collector’s haven.

Owners Wendell and Robbie Meredith, avid collectors, had been playing around with the idea of opening a store to offer their many years of collecting when a “For Lease” sign was placed in the window of a small store located on the main drag of the small town of Slocomb, AL. It was kismet. The couple went to work painting and readying the store to display their massive and unique offerings and opened within the year.

My favorite pieces.Stepping through the front door is like being welcomed into the past. The store has the feel of an old town store and features such a variety of wares it’s hard to decide which direction to go. Everything the eye finds is, as the name implies — COOL!

Its wares are eclectic, authentic, and just down right neat. Every nook and cranny of     Cool-tiques is filled with delightful objects. Vintage signs, pocket knives, antique toys, glassware…the list is extensive. There is something to tickle the fancy of all who take a stroll through this menagerie.

Love the old diner booth and coke machine!

A visit to Cool-tiques is well worth a road trip, and though it doesn’t offer the size and number of vendors of a swap meet or an antique mall, it offers something those things can’t give you — the knowledge and personal service of Wendell Meredith who knows his items well. I didn’t get to meet Robbie, but I’m sure she is just as helpful as her husband. Niece, Jennifer, was helping out behind the counter the day we visited, so there is a very nice family vibe around the place.

Another view of awesome.
Wendell with niece, Jennifer. Southern hospitality at its best!
