The Southern Girl’s Guide to Summer

Here in the South, summer is a muggy misery. Walking from the parking lot to the store can leave you drenched in sweat. Humidity is like kudzu. It permeates everything with its stifling embrace. Trust me on this — it is palpable. Through the years, I’ve discovered a few tricks to help ease the most sultry summer. They don’t alleviate the heat and humidity, but they do help get me through the worse of it. 1. Always carry a complete change of clothes. If you think this sounds extreme, I can…

Songs for a Crazy Christmas

We all have Holiday rituals. Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, I begin the season by listening to Elvis Presley’s Christmas Album. I rock out to Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me and Santa Claus is Back in Town. Then I shed a few tears when I listen to Blue Christmas, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, and If Everyday was Like Christmas. Alabama the Ugly? Pretty is as Pretty Does.

By now my fellow Alabamians have read the story and heard the outrage about the poll conducted by Business Insider declaring us the state with the ugliest people. King, Alvin Lee (with and after Ten Years After), The Allman Brothers Band. I can’t get enough. So I was intrigued when one of my favorite actors, Hugh Laurie, began cutting blues albums. First, he dropped, Let Them Talk, a tribute to New Orleans blues. Check out Laurie’s cover of the great Jimmie Rodger’s Waiting for a Train. I…

20/20 Vision – The Future Looks Bright

We of a certain generation often look at the news or read about the dismal state of American youth and wonder where in the world is our country headed? Will today’s youth ever be prepared to take up the reigns and lead the country? Then we immediately feel guilty. Didn’t we hear the same things said about us? America was doomed. It would never produce sufficient leaders from the array of unruly haired, free-spirited, rock n roll loving youth. And we were naive enough to believe we could bring about…
